Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina)

This is one of the most terrestial of turtles, living in moist woodlands and floodplains. They eat slugs, worms, wild strawberries and fungi. Box turtles are associated with Indian rituals; their shells were made into ceremonial rattles and turtles were buried with the dead.

A delay at Washington Dulles airport in Virginia had its compensation when a walk in a nearby wood led to the discovery of this Turtle. It was early spring and it was basking in the weak sun.
