Wren - Troglodytes troglodytes

A very small but dumpy bird with a stick-up tail, it forages on the ground seeking insects. It has a remakably loud voice for such a small bird and utters an alarm call like a machine gun. It is primarily a woodland bird but also lives in gardens and parkland. It is the commonest UK breeding bird but can suffer a population crash in harsh winters.
