Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus)

A shy and elusive bird of reedbeds and marshes, it is not often seen, but more often heard - it has a strange repertoire of sounds and can sound like a pig. The long red beak of the adult bird is a strong identifying feature. In winter, UK numbers are boosted by migrants.

This bird is probably the most seen Water Rail in Leicestershire as it often creeps into view from one of the bird hides. Watermead Country Park, Leicestershire, UK.
