A
common diving duck in the UK, easily recognised by the smart
black and white plumage of the male (brown and white in
the female) and the long crest. In winter, it forms large
flocks, boosted by migratory birds from Eastern Europe.
The head of the male can look both green and purple, depending
on the light. This was taken at Groby Pool in Leicestershire.
