Robin
(Erithacus rubecula)
The
Robin is probably Britain's favourite bird. It is a common
garden bird and can become almost tame when winter hunger
kicks in. It is perhaps because of this that Robin images
are widely used on Christmas cards. The Robin is a member
of the thrush family, with speckled plumage when young.
Typically it eats worms, insects and snails, but may eat
cheese and other fatty tit-bits from the bird table.

In winter,
Robins can be very approachable, as was the case here in Watermead
Country Park, Leicestershire, UK. It is a mystery why the
Robin is nicknamed 'Red-breast' as clearly the chest colour
is orange!
