Redshank (Tringa totanos)

The Redshank is the archetypal wader and commonly seen at both coastal sites and inland lakes where there are muddy shores. The red legs and a memorable cry as it flies makes it one of the easier wading birds to identify.

In winter, the beach at Worthing in West Sussex, UK, offers the chance to see a wide range of gulls and waders, attracted in part to the by-catch from the local fishing boats. This was one of many Redshanks, pushed up the beach by the rising tide.
