Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

A widespread bird of the eastern USA, found in open woodlands, parks and suburbs. The red belly is more of a pale tinge and not really easy to see. It has the black and white back of many woodpeckers but the clean buff front and the red crown and nape (nape only in females) helps to identify it.

This female (red nape only) was searching for food on the old mooring posts in Everglades City, Florida.
