Pheasant
(Phasianus colchicus)
Introduced
into Britain around the 12th century, originally from Asia.
Whilst is breeds in many areas with dense shrubby cover,
hundreds of thousands are bred and released each year to
boost numbers for shooting. There are 2 main races, the
'torquatus' has a white neck ring and a grey rump, whilst
the 'colchicus' has no neck ring and a brown rump. Each
originated from different parts of Asia.
