Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea)

A common heron of coastal wetlands in the USA where it also feeds in freshwater lakes and marshes. It is slate blue most of the year but breeding birds develop reddish purple head and neck plumage. Confusingly, juveniles are completely white and can be confused with snowy egrets.
