Knot (Calidris canutus)

A dumpy shore bird, rather plain in winter but assuming a rusty red underside in summer. It breeds in the arctic but is a common bird on mud flats in winter. In the UK it can congregate in huge flocks which wheel through the air in close formation. In the USA it is known as the Red Knot.
