Grey Heron - Ardea cinerea

The Grey Heron is usually seen as a solitary bird, often standing 'frozen' by the water's edge, waiting for a fish or a frog to come within reach of its long neck and stabbing beak. However it is a colonial breeder, building twiggy nests high up in trees. Grey Herons typically return to the same tree, or group of trees, each to year to breed - and local heronries are often well known.

It is not uncommon to see Herons in towns and cities, and they will often raid garden ponds in search of goldfish. Watermead Country Park, Leicestershire, UK
