The
Grey Heron is usually seen as a solitary bird, often standing
'frozen' by the water's edge, waiting for a fish or a frog
to come within reach of its long neck and stabbing beak.
However it is a colonial breeder, building twiggy nests
high up in trees. Grey Herons typically return to the same
tree, or group of trees, each to year to breed - and local
heronries are often well known.

It
is not uncommon to see Herons in towns and cities, and they
will often raid garden ponds in search of goldfish. Watermead
