Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major)

A bird of woodland and parks, it will also visit gardens and occassionally visit feeders as shown below. It is a striking bird, with bold black and white markings and a bright red vent. In Britain it is the most common of our three woodpeckers and much larger than the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (which is sparrow sized). Its drumming heard in spring is typically done in very short and fast bursts. In comparison the Lesser Spotted's drumming is longer, weaker but of more even tempo.

Woodpeckers use their stiff tail feathers as a prop to give them leverage against a tree trunk or, as in this case, to help them balance. Watermead Country Park, Leicestershire, UK.

Woodpeckers have toes that point both forwards and backwards to enable them to grip onto vertical tree trunks. Watermead Country Park, Leicestershire, UK.
