Goosander - Mergus merganser

This attractive duck is a member of the sawbill family, so called because of their serrated bill used for catching fish. It is resident in the northern half of the Uk but can be found thoughout in winter. It breeds on rivers and streams but in winter usually moves to lakes and gravel pits. It can be confused with the Red-breated Merganser but is distinguished by the sharp boundary of neck colour and the paler breast.
