Greater Flamingo - Phoenicopterus roseus

This is the only flamingo which is naturally found in Europe - though only in the south-western Mediterannean area. Many migrate south in the winter but some stay throughout the year. The pink bill with black tip, plus all-pink legs helps to distinguish this from other flamingo species (occasional escapees from captive collections turn up in Britain).

There were many more flamingoes than I had expected, and a few within reach of the camera. It is such an exotic bird, I took lots of photos! The Carmargue, France
