Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus)

This is the most common cormorant found in the USA, found both along the coasts and increasingly at inland waterways. It is recognised by the large yellow/orange throat pouch (seen all year round) together with the tufts or crests behind the eyes in breeding birds.

The Anhinga Trail within the Everglades National Park of Florida is one of my favourite places to view the area's wildlife where the boardwalk trail gets you close to many species. This image clearly shows the dark 'crests' of an Eastern bird, compared with the largely white tufts of cormorants in the West.
