Only recognised as a separate species in 1992, the Mareeba Rock-wallaby is only found in north-east Queensland. Rock-wallabies are medium sized and very agile marsupials which live in rocky and often steep terrain where they can hide in caves or overhangs during the day before emerging to feed at night. This type of habitat is usually very patchy so populations become easily isolated - which has led to the evolution of numerous but similar species. Many of these species are threatened with foxes identified as a major threat.
