This species is a native of tropical south Asia, from India to Sri Lanka and including China. It has been introduced into California, New Zealand and Australia where it was first brought to Melbourne in 1860. It has now spread into towns and agricultural areas where it has replaced native doves. They are normally seen alone or in pairs where they feed on seeds. They breed all year round.
